Depression-era project to inventory the land resources of Wisconsin. Field workers, usually trained foresters, tried to touch each "forty" in a county and map current land use and land cover, signs of erosion, and size and quality of stands of timber.
Wisconsin Public Land Survey Records: Original Field Notes and Plat Maps
Survey of Wisconsin was conducted between 1832 and 1866 by the federal General Land Office.

About the program:

The National Academies' Science and Technology for Sustainability Program (STS) in the division of Policy and Global Affairs was established to encourage the use of science and technology to achieve long term sustainable development. The goal of the STS program is to contribute to sustainable improvements in human well-being by creating and strengthening the strategic connections between scientific research, technological development, and decision-making.
